Have you ever watched a film or TV series and thought, “I need to go there”? You’re not alone! Apparently bookings for Ko Samui have soared since the release of the third series of The White Lotus, much like interested in Hawaii and Sicily grew with the first and second series.
Set-jetting - travelling to locations made famous by movies and television - has surged in popularity, with more travellers seeking out the real-life settings behind their favourite on-screen moments. Whether you’re a fan of fantasy epics, romantic comedies, or action-packed blockbusters, here are some must-visit destinations for film and TV lovers in 2025.
1. New Zealand – The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit
Middle-earth exists, and it’s in New Zealand. Fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit can explore the rolling green hills of Hobbiton in Matamata, hike through the dramatic landscapes of Tongariro National Park (aka Mordor), and visit Fiordland National Park, where epic battle scenes were filmed. For the ultimate experience, take a guided LOTR tour and see how New Zealand’s breathtaking scenery brought Tolkien’s world to life.
I'm not a huge LOTR fan, but I absolutely loved my visit to Hobbiton. The sets were originally temporary for the LOTR trilogy and were rebuilt and made permanent for The Hobbit so you're walking in actual Hobbit footsteps. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing, but turns out I'm the perfect height for the Hobbit houses!

2. Dubrovnik, Croatia – Game of Thrones
Dubrovnik’s medieval walls and stunning coastal views made it the perfect setting for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. Walk the city’s ancient streets and visit filming locations like Fort Lovrijenac (the Red Keep) and Pile Gate. For hardcore fans, there are themed tours offering behind-the-scenes insights into how Dubrovnik became Westeros’ most infamous city.
I visited Dubrovnik back in 2018 and you couldn't move for Game of Thrones themed tours and iron thrones. Take a walk down the "shame" steps and head over to Lokrum island for a photo opportunity on the Iron Throne without the queues!

3. Scotland – Harry Potter & Outlander
Scotland is a dream destination for fans of both Harry Potter and Outlander. The iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct is where the Hogwarts Express crosses in the films, and you can even ride the Jacobite Steam Train for a magical experience. Outlander fans can explore the real-life locations of Castle Leoch (Doune Castle) and the historic villages that brought the show’s time-travel romance to life.
There's plenty of filming locations around Edinburgh if you don't fancy venturing out of the city. Avengers: Infinity War filmed around Cockburn Street and the Edinburgh Waverley station while Outlander used Bakehouse Close and Tweeddale Court as ancient settings.
4. New York City, USA – Countless Films & TV Shows
New York City is the ultimate set-jetting destination, with iconic locations appearing in everything from Friends to Spider-Man. Visit Central Park (seen in Home Alone 2 and Sex and the City), stand on the steps of the Met (Gossip Girl), or have coffee in Greenwich Village like a Friends character (even though Central Perk was a studio set!). Film buffs can also check out guided tours covering famous movie locations across the city.
Of course one of the most famous locations is the Ghostbusters firehouse which is a real working fire station! Pop by and admire the ghostbuster decals and signage, and support the FDNY by buying their Ghostbuster inspired merch - just get out of the way when the sirens start!

5. Skellig Michael, Ireland – Star Wars
This rugged island off the coast of Ireland became instantly recognisable as Luke Skywalker’s hideaway in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to ancient monastic ruins and jaw-dropping views. While access is limited and dependent on weather conditions, visiting this remote island is an unforgettable experience for any Star Wars fan.

Set-jetting brings the magic of the movies to life, allowing travellers to step into their favourite scenes. Whether you’re exploring Middle-earth, walking through King’s Landing, or riding the Hogwarts Express, these locations offer incredible experiences beyond the screen.
